Gaining Confidence and Knowledge in the Outdoors Using a Map-Compass-GPS.
Have you ever wanted to go out for a day’s walk or a night in the mountains but have not been confident enough to try? This workshop, run by Ron Smith and Tania Wright, will help you to feel brave enough to get out there and start exploring our great outdoors. Ron will pass on his knowledge from his involvement in Search and Rescue and Tania will pass on her skills from tramping and adventure racing in the wilderness. This day-long course will cover reading maps, using a compass and GPS, basic survival skills and what to wear and take into the bush. The workshop is designed for anybody with an interest in bush walking, either on trails or going off the beaten track, whether you are a first timer or have had experience in the past and would like to expand your knowledge. Our day will start in the classroom going over how to read a map using a compass. We will also teach you how to use a GPS (Global Positioning System). Then we will do a mini exercise, finding hidden markers using the various skills taught in the morning and we will do this around the College. After lunch a 2-3 hour orienteering course is set up in the wilderness and we will partake in this with your new found skills.

This workshop focus is about having fun and gaining confidence regardless of age or fitness. You will go away feeling inspired and ready to tackle our amazing walkways and back country.

Ron has been part of the Methven Search and Rescue group for around 25yrs and is also a Director of Land Search and Rescue NZ. Throughout the day he will be regaling you with important tips that he has learnt over these years. Ron has walked most of the mountain passes from Abel Tasman and the Heaphy in the North to the Browning and Whitcombe in the south and travelled from the East coast to the West coast on these adventures mostly off track. He is passionate about our wonderful outdoors and loves to share his knowledge and has taken many school age groups for some overnight trips into the hills.

Tania is a mum of two teenagers and farms with her husband. Over the past 15 years she has competed in the Coast to Coast, Motatapu ultra marathon and many other off-road/trail adventures. Tania loves the mountains and has had a lot of fun over the years taking friends with limited experience out with her.
