About the Course
Pastel is versatile, spontaneous, pleasurable and highly tactile; making it an excellent medium for expressing all sorts of creative ideas, musings and the joy of working with pure colour. In this 2 day workshop Maxine offers you an opportunity to explore and develop both your creativity and pastel skills which you can choose to use in contemporary or more traditional styles (or a blend of both)
As a starting point, please bring with you to the workshop an object (or objects) natural or otherwise; an idea, symbols, photo resources etc….ie…. Something that you personally would like to explore further.
The workshop will involve making a series of simple sketches to work with. You will be asked to think about and explore your subject from different angles. There will be demonstrations and exercises of both pastel play and techniques (including marbling, scumbling, hatching, pointillism and blending.)
Exploring composition and colour options (and their moods) will give you choice as to how you wish to proceed with your work/s.
Ideally you will work with professional materials, giving yourself the opportunity to experience maximum satisfaction and results. Materials list will be sent. (There is always the option to use pastel in a mixed media concept as well…Pastel works well with water colour or acrylic grounds; and the option of mixing some oil and chalk based pastel together exists.)
About the Tutor
Maxine is a practicing artist and tutor with many years experience in the visual arts. She ran her own studio/gallery for 14 years ( until the Feb 22nd earthquake) at The Arts Centre of Christchurch, specializing in pastel. Her original paintings are created from a mix of working from the freedom and playfulness of the imagination, balanced with more figurative and thoughtful representational works. She brings this eclectic mix to her teaching; either encouraging you to further expand your own interests; or to explore and experiment with new ones…adding a little extra richness to your own work.
