About the Course

In this one-day course suitable for both beginners and experienced vegetable gardeners, learn how to:

  • Plan your garden - what do I plant and when?

  •  Make a no-dig garden and build a bird-proof cover for it using simple materials and techniques.

  • Sowing seeds and planting seedlings

  • Make compost

  • Save your own sees for the following year.

There will be plenty of time for discussion so other topics can be covered, so bring your gardening questions! For example, how to control pests such as aphids, when to mulch, what are green manure crops?

Mary Ralston

Mary Ralston was brought up on a farm and now lives on a small farm near Methven where she grows a year-round supply of vegetables and fruit in a garden and greenhouse. She has studied science, ecology and organic farming and works as a writer as well as a farmer.

She wrote a fortnightly column on vegetable gardening for the local Methven paper for some years and is the editor of Organics in Canterbury, the newsletter of the Canterbury Commercial Organics Group. Helping other people to learn the skills of basic gardening to grow their own produce is her motivation for offering the summer school course as she
knows how enjoyable and satisfying gardening can be.
