About the Course

This two day workshop in soft pastels (not oil) is aimed at those who already have some experience with pastels. It is based on techniques Mike has developed as a self taught pastel artist. The focus is on landscape themes.

The workshop will cover use of material, some composition and colour theory, lots of exercises (and demonstrations) in pastel techniques including finger blending, colour mixing, the rubber, grading colour, etc. The aim is that each participant be armed with sufficient skills to complete their own pastel paintings without completely smothering themselves in dust!

Mike's workshops are informal and fun so please bring your sense of humor along with your ideas (photos, sketches, paintings) and enthusiasm.

Mike Glover

Mike is an established Canterbury Artist. He lives and works in Springston South near Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere. In 1995 he initiated the Hinewai Reserve Charity Art Exhibition at Picturesque Gallery in Akaroa and later that year became a full-time artist. His work has sold to many collectors in New Zealand, the UK, Australia and North America. Mike's art work is popular for its bold, often stylized images of land, sky and water.  He is particularly known for his pastel landscape paintings which combine intensity of colour with the tonal sensitivity of the soft pastel medium. He draws inspiration from his love of the New Zealand landscape (especially that of Canterbury), native plants and animals, and his commitment to conservation and community.
