About the Course

This class is for people who want to take better photos but don’t want to get bogged down in technical details – you can leave your camera on auto but still get much improved images by thinking a little before you push the button. Today everyone has a camera capable of taking excellent photos but often the results aren’t as great as you remembered!

The concepts work for users of any camera, film or digital. We will avoid too technical information, concentrating on how to see and compose better – concepts to use at the time you take the photo.

We will start by looking at a series of photographs, grouped in to different compositional styles. You will see how you can improve your images by thinking about how you use fairly simple ideas.

After discussing ideas we will go out and put them in to action on a quick photo mission around town, so bring your cameras with you.

When we get back to the studio we will download your photos and talk about what worked and didn’t work. There will also be a chance to talk about other photos you have taken.

Bill Irwin

I am a full time photographer based in Methven, photographing landscapes and people. Some work is commissioned, much is self-generated where I photograph subjects that connect with me, and then find an outlet for the images. They end up in publications, advertising, and my personal favourites are sold as prints.

I particularly enjoy making fine prints, viewing images on screen never does them justice. There are some beautiful fine art papers available today, these combined with archival pigments are as good as it gets today.

I am a Qualified member of NZIPP (the NZ Institute of Professional Photographers) and have collected several print awards in the annual Iris Professional Photography Awards. Learning new technical skills to combine with creative ideas is something I enjoy very much. Being able to work full time as a photographer is giving me immense job satisfaction.
