FLY TYING

This course teaches the basic principles of tying flies and lures primarily for fly fishing for trout. The skills learnt will be applicable to all kinds of flies and lures - it is not a difficult skill to learn and gets better with practice.

Students will learn how to use common tools and select appropriate materials for a given fly. At the end of an hour, students will be able to tie a fly or lure that you can use to fish for trout, starting by tying simple and effective hackle flies and nymphs, moving on to more complicated winged flies.

Some of the materials you may buy and I will show you where you can obtain materials at low cost.

Introducing Jim Powell

Jim has been tying flies for trout for 60 years, since his father bought a vice and they collected feathers from common wild birds.

Flies tied by Jim have been used in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Europe with great success. Jim says successful trout flies need not be complicated or expensive to tie.
